How to get a permit

The route to a permit depends on the activity, the every journey follows the same four steps. It starts with you choosing a permit and ends with your Lead Volunteer issuing it. We're here to help with everything in between.

Step 1 of 4

Choose your permit

Start by looking at the Adventurous Activity Permit Scheme. It explains which activities need a permit and the different type of permit available, so you can choose the one that fits what you want to lead.

Not sure which permit is right for you? Ask us. We're happy to talk it through.

Step 2 of 4

Gain experience

Before your assessment, make sure you're got the skills and experiences to pass first time. You can do this on a course with an external provider, or by joining one of the courses and workshops we run throughout the year.

Step 3 of 4

Get assessed

When you feel ready, get in touch with us to arrange your assessment. One of our team will check your skills against the permit you're going for.

Already hold a nationally recognised qualification that matches your permit? You may not need a full assessment. Include the details with your application.

To start the process, send us a completed permit application form.

To renew any permits please use the permit renewal form.

Assessed by someone ourside our team?

If your assessment wasn't arranged through us, send the assessor's report and their contact details along with your application form.

Step 4 of 4

Receive your permit

Once you've been assessed, or shown a recognised qualification, your Lead Volunteer can issue your permit. Then you're ready to lead adventures for your young people.

Your Lead Volunteer won't usually issue a permit without an assessment, so make sure you've completed step three first.
