Notes from County Activity team meeting 14-11-06
Keith Hampson, Ken Sever, Chris Harbut, Ann Vernon, Mark Kennedy.
National assessors workshop
Ken Sever attended the workshop on behalf of the county, it was held in Chapel en le Frith on 22 October.
The event did not answer many of the questions thrown up by the new permit scheme. The national database is still no nearer being capable of holding the activity permit information, there is no idea when it will be…..watch this space….
On the positive side Ken said the coffee was very good.
Review of the year
Mark Kennedy’s sessions at Sale Water park had generated some interest though out the summer mainly as taster sessions. One group had completed their BCU 1 star award. Mark was also helping out with the Linnet Clough water activities where there is a constant demand. Mark had completed a couple of assessment for B1 water though the year and Chris had also issued a number of renewals and one or two new permits.
Potentially the county should be getting more qualified Kayakers thought the books but there are number in North district who are well qualified but still have not applied for a permit.
Two basic climbing workshops had been completed and some 20 leaders issued with permits to be rope or group leaders on artificial walls only.
One workshop on rock was completed and a few of the participants are nearly ready for assessment.
One basic hill walking workshop was completed with a view to giving leaders the skills to gain a terrain 1 permit. Two leaders are now ready for assessment and this should be completed before the end of the year.
Mark will run his Sale Water park sessions again, these are in the main just taster sessions.
It was agreed that it probably would not be a good idea to publish a specific session as a workshop for leaders as the standard would be so varied that it would not be practical to progress forward to an assessment.
- 2nd Cheadle ESU rope leader workshop 5th Nov & 13 Nov.
- Artificial climbing wall workshop L/C Thur 3rd & 10th May
- Dinting ESU rope leader workshop and leader assessment 17 May
- Instructors planning session for hill walking workshop 7th June
- Basic hill walking workshop 14th & 17th June.
Chris advised of the correspondence he had been in, over the suggestion by the BCU that Kayak coaches would also have to be qualified Canadian canoe coaches. Since the initial uproar, it now seem that the idea my not be implemented.
It was a concern that the meeting was so poorly attended again. It was agreed that for the county to get the most from the team there needed to be at least one representative from each district. The team could not come up with any ideas to help improve the situation.
No date was fixed for the next meeting
There was as much “fun” trying to set the alarm to get out of county office as there was to get in!!!!
