District activities since last meeting
It has been the quite season but some had been done.
Goyt have done some indoor climbing, North Tameside have done some kayaking with Droyelsden activity centre, North have done some kayaking, bell boating and climbing, Cheadle have some kayaking permits in the pipline, Ladybrook have run their own T1 workshop for DofE (15 are doing gold), Stockport are planning a water fun day.
County lead activities since last meeting
Winter skills was a success despite the lack of snow the new format of 4 days with a catering team worked well.
The scuba try dive had very poor take up. Andrew Procter, in his absence had ask if the team would discuss why this might be. One of the reasons was probably due to the lack of wide spread advertising (this was discussed in more detail later in the meeting) another thought was that it might be more applicable for youth members rather than leaders which this one was aimed at.
Leaders Climbing club
It was agreed to relaunch the club as it has become inactive of late. As Scafell meet every Wednesday it was agreed to hold it in conjunction with them as some members did both. Caroline and Gareth are to re advertise and revamp the Facebook page.
There are two T1 workshops this year, the first starting this week, the take up has been around the normal with 8 on the first and 6 on the second. We are running 2 this year due to the excess demand last year, but one would have done. Keith, Ken and Alan will run the first and Keith & Alan the second.
Artificial wall climbing
A 4 night workshop starts next month. Keith & Ken will run the first session, Ken & Caroline the second, all three the last 2 at the Clough and Gareth will assist at most. There are only 5 takers so far. So if that remains we only need 2 or each session.
Security on steep ground
There are 6 for that at present, Caroline and possibly Tim are able to run this.
There are only 3 so far for this, it will take the usual format of an evening pool session followed by a day on the lake at Linnet Clough. Cost for this workshop is £15.
If there is to be a climbers badge this year it will be in September and non residential.
We discussed this last meeting and it does not seem to have got any better. The county mail chimp bulletins do not seem to be read or the activity part anyway. It was suggested that we should use county life, the website, see if we can send out our own activity specific mailing by mail chimp and to send info to an “activities person” in each district for forwarding to all groups, Keith will ask DCs to nominate someone if they do not already have one.
Cube training for guides
Andy and Gareth are trying to sort something out for the Guides before their big camp in August at the Clough.
GMN's Tame Valley campsite should soon be opening, it is at Swineshaw Lodge near Staleybridge, Tim will advise us when it is ready for use it should be a good water activities base. There is a facebook group at this address https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/175779102435332/
Archery, a new archery club has started in Hyde this is their website http://www.goldcrestarchers.co.uk/ they have an indoor range.
Tim is the scout contact between Canoe England and all the GM counties see appendix A
1st Mellor scout group HQ (Mellor Lodge) is being taken over by Linnet Clough, since the closure of the group due to lack of leaders. It will be an ideal place for sleep overs.
Caroline advised that Will Sheaff can provide excellent first aid training from first response to REC 16 hour as required by T2 permit holders. His details: 07941 64520 email@example.com
She also advised that Sandiway have a new tower, there was some discussion which seems to be a misunderstanding by Sandiway as to what qualifications are needed to use it. It should be anyone with a permit to climb artificial walls .
Sue advised that Green Withens run by West Yorkshire scouts is an excellent water activities base. http://www.greenwithens.org.uk/
