Matters arising from last meeting
Archery “permits” . The way GMN county over comes the very expensive GNAS training and certificate is to use one of their GNAS certificate holders to train to that standard. POR states that the activity should be run to that standard not that the leader running the session has to hold a GNAS certificate.
Gareth pointed out that this has been brought up at National camp site warden meetings and there feeling is how do they prove it is run to that standard if the leader running the session does not hold a GNAS certificate.
Keith pointed out that at the last regional meeting Bernie from the HQ activities team had agreed that it only has to be run to that level and that did not necessarily mean the person running it had to hold a GNAS certificate.
Keith will speak to Andrew Corrie and Carl to see if this is a way forward.
The take up has been low this year with around 4 booked on each session so far.
Wall climbing at Linnet Clough 15th & 22 May. Instructors available Keith, Ken, & Caroline.
Basic Hill walking; 19th & 22 June evening session at County office. Instructors Keith & Ken.
T2 Safety on Steep ground; This is an addition that T1 permit holders have asked for. We are to see if it can be done in a single evening on the 10th June. Instructors Keith & Ken.
Scout climbers badge; Caroline has this all under control there are 24 scouts and 13 instructors some from “SCAFELL” running the event on 17-18 May at the Roaches based at Gradbach scout camp.
Leaders Climbing club; GMN have invited interested leaders to join them at Wingather where they are running their “have a go day” . On 4th May their team will be there from 0900 and the scouts from 1000.
We tried to find dates for GME to run sessions on a w/e and could only come up with evening sessions. Keith, Ken , Caroline and Gareth are available on Thursday 12th June & Thursday 17th July. Interested parties should contact them to register their interest.
Water; Mark Kennedy will be running the Manchester scouts canoe club sessions at Sale water park from 12th May on Mondays and Thursdays from 1830 to 2000. Mark will run sessions on other nights by arrangement. He has a new mobile phone number 07528 807698. These sessions are mainly aimed at being taster sessions. The charge is £5-00 per person, this includes all gear hire.
It was agreed, that this needs to be more widely publicised. Keith will get it put in county life.
We had a discussion about how to improve communications to districts. It was agreed that the reliance on the web was not working. This has been recognised as a problem by the county team and moves are a foot the revamp the website and county life.
The team decided our activities needed to be in every county life.
It was also agreed that all dates for the forthcoming year needed to be decided at the November meeting.
Permit holders for L/C
Carl needs qualified people to run sessions at Linnet Clough. It was agreed to ask DCs to ask leaders in their districts if they are willing to run sessions at Linnet Clough. Keith will send out to each DC a list of who has a permit for what.
It is looking increasingly likely that the High ropes course at Linnet Clough will happen.
The County team is looking into the possibility of running an explorer Belt expedition and an exploration / climbing expedition to Japan in 2011.
Ken asked for clarification on the issuing of permits. Until the national database can have activity permits added, (which is still another year off!!) it needs to be done though Keith, as he holds the county activity database and issues permit numbers. The applicant can arrange to be assessed by any assessor if they know one but again the national database does not have a list of assessors so if an applicant does not know one they needs to go though Keith to contact an assessor. Keith holds a supply of blank permits and holders and issues them to the DC with the assessment report and application.
Date of next meeting; Thursday 20th November
